5 Scary Horror Movies for Halloween
Halloween is just around the corner again and if you're planning a cozy movie night with scary films, you've come to the right place! I've put together five horror films for Halloween that will suit almost every taste.
The films are all non-splatter films , meaning that little or no blood is shown.
Sleepy Hollow
Let's start with a film that even those who don't normally like horror films can watch. The 90s were Tim Burton's golden age and this film with Johnny Depp is no exception!
The modern-thinking police constable Ichabod Crane is transferred to the town of Sleepy Hollow as a punishment. A headless horseman , a former Hessian mercenary, is causing trouble there. He chops off the heads of villagers and kidnaps them. Ichabod Crane is skeptical at first and suspects a natural explanation behind all the crimes, but little by little he begins to have doubts. To solve the mystery he gets help from two young people, Katrina and Masbath .
The story of the headless mercenary is not new; it is one of the most famous stories in American literature. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - as it is called in the original - was published in 1820 by Washington Irving and served as a source of inspiration for Tim Burton 's film.
The Woman in Black
Another Victorian (actually Edwardian) horror film! Unfortunately, many are put off by the actor Daniel Radcliffe , who became famous worldwide through the Harry Potter films. Absolute nonsense! Daniel Radcliffe did not reveal 100% of his acting talent in Harry Potter and he fits perfectly into this genre of horror film.
The lawyer and widower Arthur Kipps has to take care of the estate of the recently deceased Alice Drablow . To do this, he travels to Crythin Gifford , where he is not given a particularly friendly welcome. Sam Daily is the only one who is well-disposed towards him and also drives him to the deceased's estate. This can only be reached at low tide and hides a terrible secret...
Also a film adaptation of a literary work and was the most successful horror film in Great Britain in the last two decades. If you are a fan of Gothic fiction , you will get your money's worth here, because it doesn't get more classic British and scary than this!
Halloween
A true classic ! Old horror films are no longer so bad for our hardened minds these days, and sometimes even a bit amusing. But you shouldn't ignore the old classics, because they certainly have their charm.
On Halloween night, Laurie Strode is babysitting in her hometown of Haddonfield . 15 years ago, a gruesome murder happened in this very town. Michael Myers, who was 6 at the time, brutally murdered his older sister and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. Now he has his sights set on Laurie and is after her and her friends...
John Carpenter is a true pioneer in the horror genre and created the film on a low budget of $325,000, which became a forerunner of some slasher elements. The then unknown Jamie Lee Curtis gained the title of Scream Queen and cult status through the film.
IT
The remake of Stephen King's classic has become the most successful horror film of all time in just a few weeks - and rightly so!
At the end of the 80s, a little boy named Georgie disappears without a trace. He is one of many children who have suddenly disappeared in Derry. His big brother Bill , however, does not want to simply accept this fact and goes with his friends into the sewers to search for Georgie . After some research, the outsiders discover that every 27 years a creature that does not come from this dimension haunts the city. And now it has its sights set on them!
The two-part television classic from the 90s with Tim Curry as Pennywise has unfortunately not aged well, but the new film has been a hit. The young offspring Bill , from the well-known Skarsgård acting family, embodies Pennywise so well and so scarily that you just have to be afraid! Because of the excellent production, the great 80s flair and the talented acting qualities of the adults and children, everyone should see IT at least once.
A Quiet Place
An absolute surprise success from 2018 ! Who would have thought that ambient noises would be perfect as jump scares?
At the beginning, Lee , his wife Evelyn and their three children are looking for medicine in the city. What is striking is that everything is quiet, they walk barefoot and only communicate in sign language. After just a few minutes, the family has to suffer a terrible setback. But life must go on and preferably as quietly as possible, otherwise danger will come and kill you.
John Krasinski directed A Quiet Place and co-wrote the screenplay. The other two screenwriters, Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, were inspired by silent films that they loved to watch in their youth. The film is reminiscent of a scenario that we have all experienced more than once. We - teenagers - come home at night and just don't want to wake our parents because we have been out for far too long than agreed. Every loud noise makes our heart stop. That's the case in the film too, but it's a matter of life and death!
I wish you a successful and scary Halloween night with these five horror films!
