Girlboss Review - Nasty Gal Takes Off
The name of the Netflix series Girlboss says it all. Protagonist Sophia is a cheeky girl who is angry about everything and can't really get a firm footing in the "adult world". Or doesn't want to. She doesn't believe in authority, steals, doesn't pay her rent - she simply doesn't give a shit about anything.
But a lucky coincidence with an old leather jacket gives her an idea and changes her life fundamentally.
I have to be honest and say that when my sister told me about the series, all I thought for the first 20 minutes was: Holy cow, this girl is really making me angry!
Everyone has their defiant phase, but this constant grumpiness and disrespectful behavior really gets on your nerves. But then - after the bumpy initial phase - you suddenly realize that this character trait also has some good aspects.
The true story behind it
Girlboss is (very) loosely based on the life of entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso, who founded Nasty Gal in 2006. Maybe Nasty Gal doesn't mean anything to you? It didn't to me either before the series, but there is a very interesting story behind it.
It all actually started in San Francisco in a small apartment, with a laptop and a piece of clothing that was hanging far too cheaply in a second-hand shop. Sophia Amoruso found the item in question and sold it profitably on eBay. Thus the business idea was born and she was actually the first influencer there ever was! At first you could get hold of her vintage clothes via the Nasty Gal Vintage account on eBay, later on her own website www.nastygal.com .
Sophia earned millions with Nasty Gal and at her peak had a fortune of around $280 million. Unfortunately, this didn't last very long, as Sophia has since resigned as CEO, Nasty Gal is bankrupt and is now owned by the online store company Boohoo.com, which has its headquarters in Manchester.
Sophia Amoruso does not talk about what exactly led to everything going wrong.
The inspiration between vintage clothes
Despite everything, the series and the true story behind it are inspiring and entertaining enough to make you wish there was a second season. Unfortunately, that won't be the case, as Netflix doesn't want to release another season. Much to the regret of my sister and me.
You somehow recognize yourself in the whole series. Whether you have already gone through the process of starting your own business or are in the middle of it. You were really happy about an item that was sold or you also had to deal with buyers/sellers.
I hope you enjoy binge watching!
